Your hotel directly at the Zugspitze

Reach out and touch Germany’s highest mountain!

Reach out and touch Germany’s highest mountain! The four-star superior ROMANTIK ALPENHOTEL WAXENSTEIN is situated in a slightly elevated location on the outskirts of Grainau, near to Garmisch Partenkirchen and the lake Eibsee.

This exquisite location brings the Hotel a little bit closer to heaven and to the sun! In our Hotel and Restaurant you will always be able to recharge your batteries with light and sunshine.

In summer, just look out of your hotel window and the mountains entice you to go hiking, mountain biking, bathing at Eibsee or climbing. In winter you have the adjacent classic ski region of Garmisch and the Zugspitze. Cross country skiers and snowshoe trekkers are also here in the right place in our ski region Zugspitze. Then, of course, afterwards there is also our hotel wellness area for relaxation and recuperation.

The village of Grainau is only a short walk away from the ROMANTIK ALPENHOTEL WAXENSTEIN and here you will find all the advantages of a small and cozy village in the Bavarian Alps. Here you can go shopping or visit a restaurant or take an excursion to a place of interest – it’s all possible in Grainau. Garmisch Partenkirchen is quite near, only a short distance away by car.

We would like to give you here the first taste of possible excursions and activities and give you an appetite for more:

Castles, art and typical Alpine features.

For everyone who would like to explore the mountains in the footsteps of kings, the castles in our region are a super destination:
  • Schachen Castle, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  • Linderhof Castle, near Ettal
  • Neuschwanstein Castle, near Füssen

We are happy to help you plan your own personal "King-Ludwig II Tour".

Other super ideas include a horseback tour or mountain bike tour. For all those who are not able or don’t wish to walk far, we arrange rides in horse-drawn carriages which take visitors to all the attractions of the area.

In summer you can master a different mountain every day, including Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze.

Go hiking around the lake Eibsee, visit the Höllentalklamm or just stroll around Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Grainau with their typical Bavarian architecture. Afterwards simply relax in the wonderful wellness facilities of our first class hotel or enjoy excellent cuisine in our restaurant.

“Art in the Mountains”: Expressionists in the Alps.

Franz Marc Museum

Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc, (his full name), was born in Munich on February 8, 1880 and died at the age of only 36 on March 4, 1916 near  Verdun in France. He is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Together with Wassily Kandinsky, this German artist was a founder member of the group of artists known as "Blaue Reiter" and of expressionist art in Germany.

The Franz Marc Museum, inaugurated in 1986 in an idyllic location at Kochel am See, is dedicated to the works of this outstanding artist. In 2008 the museum was extended. A visit to Kochel is an absolute must for all lovers of the painter’s incredible works of art.

Afterwards, you can then for example, relax in a pedal boat or rowing boat on the lake before returning to the Romantic Hotel Waxenstein to enjoy an evening meal or regenerate with a visit to the wellness facilities.

Buchheim Museum

The Buchheim Museum inspires all the senses. The famous “pier walk” over the lake “Starnberger See” is only one of the many special features of this museum.

Nature: The Buchheim Museum is situated to the north of Bernried in the Höhenrieder Park, directly on the lakeshore of Starnberger See. When walking through the park, the feeling is “at one with nature”. There are old trees, natural ponds, pagodas, sculptures and other works of art which line the pathway to the Museum. The whole area is surrounded by fertile meadowland and the wonderful panorama of the Alps.

Art: The Buchheim Museum brings together four collections under one roof: The heart of the exhibition is the famous collection of Expressionist works with paintings, watercolors, sketches and graphics primarily by artists of the "Brücke". At the same time the museum is also a museum of ethnology (of local traditions and history). These exhibits show artworks from all over the world, Bavarian art together with African art and works from countries outside Europe. The works of the artist Lothar-Günther Buchheim are on display. There are special and changing exhibits which add to the vitality of the museum.

Architecture: The building by Günter Behnisch was erected specifically for the Buchheim Collections. The architectural design incorporates diverse features and the building is really a fascinating sight on the lakeside, providing the perfect setting and reflecting the extraordinary diversity of the works of art. The long building ends in a twelve meter long “pier” out into the lake and which is a perfect invitation to everyone to go out on it and relax in the sunshine.
